Avocado Tuna Salad Sandwich and ¡Sponch!

Last month I tried a Vienna sausage sandwich thanks to my seeing a coworker eating one for lunch. It was not good. Today I'm trying an avocado tuna salad sandwich based on another coworker's non-recommendation. She actually said it was awful, but being the kind of guy that I am, I knew I had to try it.

I like avocados and I like tuna, so this one seemed obvious. The fact that my coworker appeared nauseated just talking about the tuna salad didn't dissuade me in the least. I emailed her this recipe and she confirmed that this was, indeed, the exact recipe she'd used, so here goes.

Here is my inventory of goods:

The recipe had me dice the carrots, onions, and celery so I did. Then I prepared everything else, like this:

Pretty colors!

That's an F load of onions. I threw half of them away. I then mixed everything together, following the recipe. Here is the finished product:

Looks pretty true to the picture on the recipe. With such a strange combination of flavors I didn't really know what to expect, but I knew it wasn't going to taste like any tuna salad I'd ever had. My standard tuna salad consists of just tuna and Miracle Whip. I put the salad on a sandwich:

*here is where there SHOULD be a picture of my avocado tuna salad sandwich but my A-hole phone didn't save the pic*

I took a bite of the sandwich, expecting the worst. The result...? It was okay. kind of an anticlimactic ending after all that effort; I was hoping for it to either be truly terrible or delightfully delicious. It was neither. At least the pictures are nice and colorful. I think next time I would grate the carrots, forget the onions, and use less celery.

Final Grade: C

Since that was so... average, I've decided to also review a Mexican snack I found, ¡Sponch!

The box claims that this oddly-named treat is a "Marshmallow cookie with artificially flavored strawberry topping and Coconut." Being the trier-of-all-things, I bought a box. I've heard tales of Mexican snacks and candy tasting really stale, so I wasn't expecting a lot.

I did some research on ol' ¡Sponch! because I was curious about what "sponch" meant. I found a few different definitions:

  • Urban Dictionary: a verb meaning to nerd-out in public about nerdy topics.
  • Acronym Finder: an acronym meaning Sulfur, Phosphorus, Oxygen, Nitrogen, Carbon, Hydrogen, which are the key elements of life.
  • Urban Dictionary: another term for whiskey dick.

So basically, I'm either about to eat something very nerdy, something that's alive, or some flaccid penis. I'm slightly nervous...

This is what they look like in person:

Not too bad looking , although they kinda skimped on the strawberry topping. I ate a few and... they're not too bad! Stale, like I expected, but the staleness kind of goes with the flavors and textures. They aren't very sugary, which is good for me because I'm not super into sweets. I think I can confidently recommend ¡Sponch!

Final Grade: B+

  1. The Mexican snack looks like it came out of a horror fairytale.

  2. I always learned the elements as CHNOPS, pronounced "Shnops" - it sounds so much better. My high school chem teacher taught me how essential CHNOPS is for a healthy life long before I discovered the healing power of schnapps. I like to think he was using subliminal messaging.

  3. I too like avocado and tuna. However, I just don't think the texture of the celery and the carrot would do the sandwich justice. I like avocado, tuna, a bit of spring onion, tomato, salt and pepper to season. Now you know my eating habits. My husband isn't a fan. It's probably the cat food breath...

Have you tried Iced VoVos? They seem a lot like that Mexican snack you tried only they don't look so dodgy haha.

  4. That avocado and tuna sandwich looks effing disgusting. Not gunna lie. I usually like avocado (on guacamole) and loooove tuna, but some things shouldn't be combined.

and you didn't like that vienna sausage sandwich?! What the eff. I survived off vienna sausages and ramen for about 3 years of my life. I can't even look at you right now, Woody :(

  5. I like avocado and tuna separately, but never thought of mixing them together like that. I've had a tuna salad sandwich with slices of avocado on top and that was just yummy!

  6. Alright, now I have to try this recipe and figure out what's missing. Your tuna salad recipe isn't what I have made for you. Your's is the lazy-man's recipe. I always used tuna, miracle whip, celery seed, and mustard seed. Your gradmother would also put in some diced sweet pickle and a little chopped hard boiled egg; that I really like but, since I am lazy as well, don't usually do that.

  7. culinarystorm: When you put it that way (horror fairytale) the Sponch looks a little ominous! I kinda like it.

Shane: Your chem teacher clearly knew what he was talking about. CHNOPS, and even more so Schnapps, has been known to make a person much more lively!

Kez: I will definitely have to try your version of the avocado tuna salad, it seems way better. The textures WERE off a bit... I haven't tried Iced VoVos, but I did look them up and they look pretty great! I'm a little worried about the tagline on the box though, "Sweet and Interesting."

Carrymel: No, I didn't like it. I like Vienna sausages, but the olives completely ruined the taste, too salty. Why can't you look at me..? :(

Myli: Avocado on top does seem like an excellent alternative! I'll remember that for next time.

Dad: Your recipe is pretty great, but I am, indeed, a lazy man. But feel free to make it for me anytime :)

  8. The tuna avocado salad looks like a "good" idea, but I can imagine it being pretty disgusting. It almost looks like it suffers from too many ingredients. I seriously dislike the smell, taste and texture of canned tuna though... so gross... but I LOVE avocados. So gimme those and you can keep the rest. :)

P.S. Thanks for stopping by my blog. Geek <3.
